We invite you to join us Thursday 12 May For an event Cinema special. We will welcome the producer Thierry Garrel, the director François Caillat, the director and screenwriter Cristina Comencini and the director Mariana Otero for breakfast in Vancouver (667 Howe Street, Vancouver) as part of DOXA.

The program

About our guests

Thierry Garrel is a producer and screenwriter, known in particular for Of Men and War (Of men and war), Lost in Bosnia (Lost in Bosnia) and the television series Snark. He is also a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres. From 1987 to 2008, he was the head of the documentary film department at La Sept and ARTE France. Since 2009, he has been working as a consultant and is dedicated to “feedback”, by supervising international seminars and workshops for young creators and documentary professionals.

François Caillat is a director and screenwriter, known for The fourth generation, Julia Kristeva, Strange stranger and Welcome to Bataville. Initially a philosophy teacher, he finally turned to cinema. He formed while shooting several short fiction films and musical films, before moving on to feature films. Since the mid-1990s, he has been involved in the production of films at the border between documentary and essay: feature films produced for cinema or television (Arte), portraits of intellectuals and writers.

Cristina Comencini is an Italian director, screenwriter and writer. She and her sisters attended Lycée Français Chateaubriand in Rome, her birthplace. In 2005, his movie The beast in the heart, based on her own novel La Bestia nel Cuore, was nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Her film debut dates back to 1988, where she wrote the screenplay for the movie directed by her father. Merry Christmas, happy new year.

Mariana Otero is a director and actress, known in particular for In our hands (2010), In the open (2013) and Story of a look (2019). She makes documentaries on various themes, for which she has received numerous awards. Mariana Otero also teaches cinema at the Ateliers Varan, at Femis, at the University of Jussieu, at Creadoc (University of Poitiers), as well as at the École cantonale d'art de Lausanne.
